Totally not true, um, Ash. Some metal fans do feel that way... but a good number I've met don't care who knows them. Sometimes bands lose their edge or youthful vitality or whatever. Sometimes bands gain it, and their later stuff is much better. Depends.
Your problems are utterly alien to me. It's like a bear complaining to a shark that its knees hurt.

1. Get in your car.
2. Go to Target or Best Buy or whatever is close
3. Plunk down 12 bucks.
4 The end.

or, if you want to hear it first...

1. Go to http://www.myspace.com
2. Click on Music in the top toolbar.
3. Search for the band.
4. Listen.

I wish it wasn't true, but there are too many examples of the "fanboy" scenario to pass up pointing it out.
